Fertilizer

  • . Optimum pH is 6.5. Lime and fertilize according to soil test. Without a soil test, use 300 lbs of 19-19-19.
  • Always use fresh seed; store seed in a dry, low humidity environment below 85ºF.
  • PRE-PLANTING HERBICIDE APPLICATION:
  • It is best to start with a clean, weed-free seed bed.
    • · Use tillage or a pre-plant burndown herbicide such as Roundup (glyphosate only version) or Liberty depending on your emerged weeds and use a pre-emerge herbicide.
  • Make sure your pre-emerge herbicide is activated by rain or irrigation. You can use Prowl, Metribuzin, Fierce or Valor at the labeled rate (make sure to read and follow label directions).
  • Planting date
    • Plant after your last spring frost when soil temps are above 65 degrees F, but no greater than 90.
    • Soybeans have hypogeal emergence, so plant after a run to prevent problems associated with soil crusting.
  • Depth/method
    • plant at 3/4 to 1 3/4 into moist soil. Plant one bag per acre into 1/4 inches below the soil moisture line. When broadcasting plant 1.3 bags per acre. Make sure to cover well, but no deeper than 1.75 inches.

Herbicide Use After Plant Emergence

Roundup PowerMax and WeatherMax are the best products at 22-32 oz per acre on weeds that are 4 inches tall or less. Waiting to spray on taller plants causes the loss of herbicides by building weed population tolerance. BE CAREFUL NOT TO USE GENERIC ROUNDUP FORMULATIONS THAT CONTAIN EXTRA CHEMICALS OTHER THAN GLYPHOSATE.
