Description
Plant in a weed-free seed bed that is well-drained. Planting occurs after the spring soil temperature is 60 degrees at a rate of 7-9 lbs per acre. Planting should occur in a moist soil with a 6.5-7 pH at 1-1.5 inches depth.
These plants are capable of producing 10-15 tons per acre. For silage or forage production, you need 150 units of N per acre with 70 units of P and K. Harvest usually starts around 30 inches in height around 25 days. Mow at cutting height of 4 inches to encourage regrowth. Use a wide windrow to speed dry-down and limit handling.
For grazing, you can start at 18-24 inches. Don’t go early, because you could risk prussic acid. Graze to 6-8 inches, wait 30 days for recovery.
